The Premiers Reading Challenge closes by the end of day on Friday! 

Students need to complete entry of books on their Student Reading Record (SRR) by the 31st of August to be eligible for the award of a certification of their efforts.

Public Speaking Competition

Don't forget that next week is the class round of the Public Speaking Competition. You have had some time in class but you will now need to spend some time writing and practising your speech at home. You will have received this booklet attached to an email some weeks ago.

Book Week

Science week competitions - encourage your children to join in!

All students - test your inner scientist this week and join in the Daily Science quiz, or try your hand in construction and engineering opportunities in Makerspace on Monday!

Check out the amazing close-up photographs and see if you can work out what is in the photos? Use the Google form to submit the answers!

Daily quizzes - listen to the questions at assembly and write your answer on a slip of paper, add your name and class, and post it in the box near the FlexiRoom.

Last few weeks!!!!!

Log in to the Premiers Reading Challenge web site to record all the books you have read before 31 August. 

There is still time to join in the challenge of reading different quality literature as recommended by the NSW Premier! 

You only need to read 20 books on your own, or read them with someone or someone can read them to you.

There is helpful section to search for book choices on the Premiers Reading Challenge web site. 
Log onto Premiers Reading Challenge search and then explore the available categories.

Young Writers' Competition

Where will your tiny door lead you?

The Northern Beaches Young Writers’ Competition 2018 is now open. 

Write an original story using this year’s theme words ‘tiny door’ for a chance to be published as an author in a Library eBook. 

Entries close Wednesday 8 August.

The Competition is open to students up to and including Year 12.

After a tense and exciting battle with a number of off-sides, 2 x yellow cards, one player lost under the stage and another player even shooting out the door of the hall! 

The final score was similar to the Japan v Senegal 

Score of 2:2 - our draw was 3: 3!

500 Word Writing Competition

So you love to read books by your favourite authors?  

Think you could come up with an awesome story too?

THEN THIS IS THE COMPETITION FOR YOU! 

Ask your parents first!!!!

THE CHALLENGE: Use your awesome storytelling skills to create a 500-word short story of your own.

There are three categories:

7 - 8 YEARS

9-10 YEARS

11-12 YEARS

PRIZING UP FOR GRABS: The winner in each category will receive signed copies of their mentors' books and a personalised congratulatory video also from their mentor.

The winning story in each category will be turned into a physical book for you to keep (ten copies per winner).

​

Each winning story will be published in ‘Just Kidding’ magazine alongside an interview with the author.

​

Let your imagination run free and write about something you like. Remember your story can be about absolutely anything you like.
The only criteria is to keep your story to under 500 words in total. If you think your story should include illustrations, you can send them in too.

Inspirational Visitors

We have been lucky enough to have two very inspirational visits this week. The first was Angela Michael, a Pakistani woman who co-founded the Miracle School to educate the children of families working in the Brick Kilns of Pakistan. This inspirational woman talked to the Year 5 and 6 students about poverty, education and how Christians in Pakistan are helping to break the poverty cycle.





Our second visit this week was from author, Kate Forsyth and illustrator, Lorena Carrington. These amazing women talked to Year 5 and 6 students about fairytales, depictions of girls in stories and all about the writing and illustrating process.

On Wednesday, 14th of March, Kate Forsyth and Lorena Carrington will be visiting St Luke's Grammar School for a special workshop with Years 5 and 6 Bayview students.

Kate Forsyth wrote her first novel at the age of seven, and is now the internationally bestselling, award-winning author of 30 books for both adults & children. She was recently voted one of Australia's Favourite 25 Novelists, has completed a doctorate in fairy tales, and is an accredited master storyteller.

Retold by Kate Forsyth and illustrated by photographic artist Lorena Carrington, Vasilisa the Wise & Other Tales of Brave Young Women is a welcome antidote to the widespread perception that classic fairy-tales feature passive princesses waiting patiently for their prince. Drawing from both the oral and literary traditions, the book retells tales from Russia, Scotland, Norway, France, Germany and Great Britain. The stories were all chosen for the strength and courage of their female protagonists, and the beauty of their original lyrical style.

Library Lovers Month - Mystery Reads!

We have been challenging students to try new books

and launched Library Lovers Month.

All students were given the opportunity to pick a Mystery Read from reading only the first sentence of a ‘hidden’ book

- no title, no cover picture, no author details ..... tricky!

Students got a Library Lovers Book Mark and were invited to write their name, the title of the book and tell us what they thought of their ‘mystery’ read.

Congratulations to everyone who took the challenge – very brave!

Premiers Reading Challenge 2018!

It is exciting to launch the Premier's Reading Challenge for 2018. The aims of the Challenge are to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely.

If your child attended St Luke’s Grammar in 2017 they are already enrolled in the Challenge for 2018. Their existing PRC username and password are the same as last year and access is at PRC site: https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html from Monday 5 March.

Mrs Duffy will send home a Personal Reading Record along with student log-in details on Monday or Tuesday this week and the students will then be able to access the PRC site and record books read.

By entering this challenge, your child is declaring that they have read the books entered in accordance with their school year rules.

 

K-2 students – can read the books on their own, read them with someone, or someone can read to them. If your child is reading simple chapter books they can attempt the 3-4 challenge – please let Mrs Duffy know if this is your child so that she can change the record?

3-6 students – must read the books on their own, but someone can help choosing them.

The Learning Hub team has gathered a selection of PRC books for each stage that are now on display in the Hub. Students will need to visit your local library to access other interesting titles.

Don’t forget - we are launching the event with a Scholastic Book Fair and the cabinets are due to arrive in the morning of 6 March we will open for sales on Tuesday after school. Come along to the Learning Hub from 2.35 to find an exciting range of PRC and other book titles.

Tuesday 6 March from 2.35

Wednesday and Thursday 7 & 8 March from 8.00-830 and 2.35-3.00

Monday 12 March 8.00-8.30 and 2.35-3.00

             

The students have until the 31 August 2018 (11.59) to complete the Challenge.

Premiers Reading Challenge and Book Fair - 6 March

It Here! The NSW Premiers Reading Challenge (PRC) starts on Monday 5 March and to launch the reading initiative the school is holding a Book Fair.

The Scholastic Book Fair will be open in the Learning Hub Tuesday - Thursday 6-8^th March from 8.00-830 and 2.30-3.00.

Your children will be enrolled on the PRC website and your child will be able to log in and start recording books read from 6 March.

K-2 students – you can read the books on your own, read them with someone, or someone can read them to you. If your child is reading simple chapter books they can attempt the 3-4 challenge – please let Mrs Duffy know if this is your child.

3-6 students – you must read the books on your own, but someone can help you choose them.

The Learning Hub team is gathering all the PRC books we hold so you will easily find some titles with us but a visit to your local library will be required to access the vast majority of books – there are over 1500 book titles for each age group!

Students will receive a Certificate for each year they complete the Challenge:

                                             

The online Student Reading Record must be completed by 31 August 2018 (11.59) to complete the Challenge.

If your child meets the challenge target, their certificate will have their name and school printed on it and the Honour Roll has names listed by alphabetical order but does not mention your school name. 

If you do not want your child to receive a certificate or be on the Honour Roll, you must not enter any books in your online Student Reading Record.

By entering this challenge, your child is declaring that they have read the books entered in accordance with their school year rules.

MakerSpace 3-6 = Monday 2nd half lunch

Year 3-6 Makerspace 

Week 3 saw the start of the Bayview Clubs and these delightful students challenged their listening and verbal skills. 

Students had to engineer an 'item' that they couldn't see and had to rely on the expert description provided by their buddy.

Well done these students!

Are you able to search for books, and develop Learning Hub communication with the school community?

Do you have suggestions for improving the Learning Hub as a quality learning environment?



If you answered 'yes' to most of these questions then please write a short note to Mrs Duffy explaining why you think you'd make a good Learning Hub Leader. Drop it into the Hub by Friday 16 February.

Welcome back to Term 1 from the Learning Hub!

There are lots of exciting events and initiatives planned for 2018 and we can't wait to share them!

Starting with a Scholastic Book Fair to coincide with the launch of the Premiers Reading Challenge the week beginning 5 March.

The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. 

It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely.
